Dr. Black, one of the authors, is actually my professor for the class requiring this book. That said, this book is fantastic. It gives great description of various cell systems and their protocols. Obviously this is meant for an electrical engineering curriculum and it does require background knowledge in basic probability and communication theory, but it is still an easy read.
